Using a car to pull an airplane is nothing new. We've seen a Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI, a Nissan Patrol and a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S all tug widebody aircraft. A few years ago, there was even a Toyota Tundra that pulled the Space Shuttle Endeavour across the 405 in Los Angeles. Now Australia's Qantas Airways has joined the fray, using the all-electric Tesla Model X P100D.

Kia hopping on the 48-volt ultra-mild hybrid bandwagon

Auto Blog News Feed - Tue, 05/15/2018 - 17:20

Kia has announced that it will join an expanding line of automakers, including Audi, Ram, Volvo and others, adding ultra-mild 48-volt hybrid systems to their engines. The system works like other systems in that it has a combination starter and generator connected to the engine crank via a belt. It allows the engine to be shut off earlier than simply at a stop, and provides a bit of electrical assistance to reduce how much the engine has to work on takeoff.

Vile Gossip: 3 Laps of America, one crazy run at a time

Auto Blog News Feed - Tue, 05/15/2018 - 16:15

My ringer of a driver and I both sucked at the confusing Time-Speed-Distance high math, so we hired a pro navigator from California, a guy who'd won a cross-country race doing these TSD equations the whole way. He got us lost the minute we hit the U.P., which meant we were doomed.

Autoblog Classifieds finds: 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT

Auto Blog News Feed - Tue, 05/15/2018 - 15:15

Thirty years after General Motors stopped building it, the Pontiac Fiero might have finally emerged from the darkness. First, it was a humble commuter car that just happened to be a mid-engined coupe, then it was a re-skinnable basis for Fierorraris or other slightly strange kit cars, and then it made some Worst Cars of All Time lists due to its econobox ingredients, including its Chevy Citation suspension parts. But after a few decades, even the most mediocre car will become interesting, as mos

Lotus Exige Sport 410 Quick Spin Review | An unobtainable gem previews an American future

Auto Blog News Feed - Tue, 05/15/2018 - 14:07

You can get the measure of a car brand by the environment in which its products are built. The narrow, bumpy, hedge-lined lanes of eastern England explain a lot about the way a Lotus goes. The character of a company's chief speaks to the brand's intentions as well. Jean-Marc Gales has been portrayed unflatteringly as a Eurocrat bean counter, but his approach has been to strip weight and cost out of the product to the benefit of performance on both track and bottom line, defining brand attributes
